Melissa Shin

With more than a decade of financial reporting and newsroom management experience, Melissa Shin heads Newcom Media Inc.’s suite of industry-leading English and French investment publications. Her work has been cited in university syllabi, in textbooks and to national regulators. In 2017, she won awards from both CFA Society Toronto and the Portfolio Management Association of Canada for her reporting. Past honours have included an award from Women in Communications and Technology and a fellowship from the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources. Before joining the Advisor’s Edge team in 2011, Melissa was managing editor of Corporate Knights, an independent magazine focused on clean capitalism. While there, she launched multiple sustainability rankings and was asked to advise national organizations on ESG strategy. A graduate of the Schulich School of Business at York University, Melissa was chair of Point of View, the country’s premiere magazine about documentary culture, from 2013 to 2017.

Mark Burgess

Mark Burgess has been covering business and politics for more than a decade. He reported on regulatory policy and legislation from the Parliamentary Press Gallery as editor of The Lobby Monitor and deputy editor of The Hill Times, and covered the marketing world as strategy magazine’s associate editor. He’s been nominated for a National Magazine Award and a National Magazine Award: B2B, and received top prize at the 2021 PMAC Awards for Excellence in Investment Journalism. The CFA Society Toronto named him 2021 Journalist of the Year.

Gil Martinez

Gil Martinez

Gil Martínez has more than two decades of design experience and has worked for publishers throughout North America. He has been a member of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers since 2004, where he has reviewed portfolios for junior designers and prospective members, and participated in its Education and Ethics committees. He has received accolades from the HOW International Design Awards, the SoGood Design Awards, the Canadian Business Media Awards and others. In addition to his work as art director for Newcom Media Inc.’s Financial Group, Gil writes about branding and design for the financial industry, has written a book about calligraphy and typography, and teaches editorial design at Centennial College.

Katie Keir

Katie Keir

Katie Keir, who was named Best New Journalist by the Canadian Business Media Awards in 2012, has been reporting on financial services and business trends for more than 10 years. As the research and special projects editor for Advisor’s Edge and Investment Executive (IE), her primary focus is on IE’s annual industry Report Card series. Her reporting specialties have included regulatory reform, compliance and the evolution of environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices. From 2016 to 2020, she volunteered as the editorial director of the Toronto Vegetarian Association’s quarterly magazine, which in part covered ethical and environmental issues. Katie holds an Honours Bachelor’s degree in English and Drama from the University of Toronto.

Michelle Schriver

Previously a freelance editor and writer, Michelle Schriver brings her passion for editing and writing about complex topics to the team. While completing Ryerson’s Certificate in Publishing, she won two awards for academic excellence and innovation. Michelle is an active member of Editors Canada, for which she’s served as sponsorship chair and branch seminars chair. Despite having success as a do-it-yourself investor — in her university days, she admits she invested her tuition money in stocks between semesters — she’s now gained the wisdom to listen to the experts.
